Yoichiro Maeda, Daisuke Katagami, and Tsuyoshi Nakamura | ||
In recent years, computers, artificial agents, intelligent robots, and other intelligent systems have become normal parts of our everyday lives, so high interpersonal affinity, including smooth communications and bidirectional interactions with people, have become necessary for the development of intelligent systems. “Human Symbiotic Systems” (HSS) is an area of research to study the basic principles and methods used in the designing of intelligent interaction systems, or systems with bidirectional communications based on the symbiosis and effective collaboration between people and robots, agents, computers, etc. In HSS research, the establishment of elemental technologies necessary for the realization of intelligent systems to coexist with people is a main target. The research society “Human Symbiotic Systems” was established in the Japan Society for Fuzzy Theory and Intelligent Informatics in 2007 by the guest editors of this special issue. The HSS aims to encourage academic and industrial discussions on research of Human-Agent Interaction (HAI), Human-Robot Interaction (HRI), Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), etc. The aim of this special issue is to activate and expand top-quality research in the area of the theory and applications of Human Symbiotic System (HSS). This special issue “Human Symbiotic Systems II” (HSS-II) is the second special feature of the HSS. The first special issue appeared as JACIII journal Vol.14, No.7 in 2010. Various technologies have been developed in the past ten years, but HSS continues to be an important area of study in the field of engineering today. For this special issue on HSS-II, 10 papers were received, and 7 papers were accepted for publication after two peer reviews each. We would like to thank the authors and referees for their great efforts. Through their contributions, this special issue was made possible and overall paper quality was improved. |

On September 6, 2017, we lost a great researcher, Prof. Lotfi A. Zadeh, the one who introduced one of the most important mathematical concepts that gets a good rapport with reality. “Fuzzy Sets” was the paper he published in 1965. Many researchers and practitioners of mathematics, science, engineering, medicine, and economics found it fascinating. In Japan, consumer electronics incorporating ambiguity in human thought and behavior became popular. As these products became big topics, the term “fuzzy” also became popular in the 1990s. This set of papers offers a sample of the expanding development of fuzzy logic and soft computing. One review paper is written by Prof. Takeshi Yamakawa, an internationally famous fuzzy researcher of fuzzy hardware systems. Four of these papers were selected through a peer review process. One, “Design of Fuzzy Logic Controller and its Distinctive Features” by Prof. Takeshi Yamakawa, describes the design of a fuzzy logic controller and its application to controlling mouse-platform stabilization. The distinctive features of fuzzy logic control are also discussed. The first original paper, “MMMs-Induced Possibilistic Fuzzy Co-Clustering and its Characteristics” by Ubukata et al., describes an NPCCMM scheme by considering variable cluster volumes and the fuzziness degree of item memberships to investigate the specific aspects of fuzzy rather than probabilistic nature in co-clustering tasks. The second original paper, “Inner Evaluation of Writing in a Foreign Language Based on Expert Judgment for Correction” by Entani et al., proposes a method of numerically deriving each writer’s writing preference from an expert’s initial evaluation. Third, “A 3-Dimensional Fuzzy Linguistic Evaluation Model” by Suprasongsin et al., describes a new model for determining criteria weights in group decision-making problems, a model based on the concept of probabilistic linguistic terms. The fourth original paper, “Natural Language Generation Using Monte Carlo Tree Search” by Kumagai et al., proposes a method for generating simulation-based natural language. The method accounts for both building a correct syntactic structure and reflecting the given situational information as input in the sentences generated. We appreciate Prof. Takeshi Yamakawa for the excellent review of fuzzy controllers. We also thank all of the authors who submitted original articles and all of the reviewers who offered their valuable comments and suggestions. |

Various applications of data analysis and their effects have been reported recently. With the remarkable progress in classification methods, one example being support vector machines, clustering as the main method of unsupervised classification has also been studied extensively. Consequently, fuzzy methods of clustering is becoming a standard technique. However, unsolved theoretical and methodological problems in fuzzy clustering remain and have to be studied more deeply. This issue collects five papers concerned with fuzzy clustering and related fields, and in all of them the main interest is methodology. Kondo and Kanzawa consider fuzzy clustering with a new objective function using q-divergence, which is a generalization of the well-known Kullback-Leibler divergence. Among different data types, they focus on categorical data. They also show the relations of different methods of fuzzy c-means. Thus, this study tends to further generalize methods of fuzzy clustering, trying to find the methodological boundaries of the capabilities of fuzzy clustering models. Kitajima, Endo, and Hamasuna propose a method of controlling cluster sizes so that the resulting clusters have an even size, which is different from the optimizing of cluster sizes dealt with in other studies. This technique enhances application fields of clustering in which cluster sizes are more important than cluster shapes. Hamasuna et al. study the validity measures of clusters for network data. Cluster validity measures are generally proposed for points in Euclidean spaces, but the authors consider the application of validity measures to network data. Several validity measures are modified and adapted to network data, and their effectiveness is examined using simple network examples. Ubukata et al. propose a new method of c-means related to rough sets, a method based on a different idea from well-known rough c-means by Lingras. Finally, Kusunoki, Wakou, and Tatsumi study the maximum margin model for the nearest prototype classifier that leads to the optimization of the difference of convex functions. All papers include methodologically important ideas that have to be further investigated and applied to real-world problems. |

Machine learning has been attracting significant attention again since the potential of deep learning was recognized. Not only has machine learning been improved, but it has also been integrated with “reinforcement learning,” revealing other potential applications, e.g., deep Q-networks (DQN) and AlphaGO proposed by Google DeepMind. It is against this background that this special issue, “Cutting Edge of Reinforcement Learning and its Hybrid Methods,” focuses on both reinforcement learning and its hybrid methods, including reinforcement learning with deep learning or evolutionary computation, to explore new potentials of reinforcement learning. Of the many contributions received, we finally selected 13 works for publication. The first three propose hybrids of deep learning and reinforcement learning for single agent environments, which include the latest research results in the areas of convolutional neural networks and DQN. The fourth through seventh works are related to the Learning Classifier System, which integrates evolutionary computation and reinforcement learning to develop the rule discovery mechanism. The eighth and ninth works address problems related to goal design or the reward, an issue that is particularly important to the application of reinforcement learning. The last four contributions deal with multiagent environments. These works cover a wide range of studies, from the expansion of techniques incorporating simultaneous learning to applications in multiagent environments. All works are on the cutting edge of reinforcement learning and its hybrid methods. We hope that this special issue constitutes a large contribution to the development of the reinforcement learning field. |

Six years have passed since the publication of our Special Issue on Human-Robot Interaction Systems in 2011. Since then, artificial intelligence and robotics have developed rapidly, and the opportunities for human beings and robots to work together have increased. The objective of this special issue’s twelve articles is to activate and expand high-quality research. In the first article, Y. Tamura, T. Akashi, and H. Osumi propose a computational model of robot’s gaze. In the second article, S. Hoshino and K. Uchida propose an interactive motion planner for robot navigation in dynamic environments. In the third article, T. Iio, Y. Yoshikawa, and H. Ishiguro develop a conversational robotic system based on human response. In the fourth article, K. Sakai, F. Dalla Libera, Y. Yoshikawa, and H. Ishiguro propose a method for generating bystander robots’ actions that is based on an analysis of the relative probabilities of human responses to robot actions. In the fifth article, T. Matsumaru and M. Narita present a newly developed support system for learning calligraphy strokes. In the sixth article, E. Tamura, Y. Yamashita, T. Yamashita, E. Sato-Shimokawara, and T. Yamaguchi present a method of driving a car simply by gesturing. In the seventh article, A. Kurosu and T. Hashimoto develop an eye robot with two degrees of freedom. It is intended for use as a communication robot. In the eighth article, T. Hashimoto, Y. Munakata, R. Yamanaka, and A. Kurosu report on a method for retrieving episodic memories. In the ninth article, Y. Nishikawa, Y. Kagawa, and A. Okazaki develop a spiral movement robot for inpatients. In the tenth article, Y. Umesawa, K. Doi, and H. Fujimoto develop an interface device that creates kinaesthetic illusions by inducing vibrations in muscle tendons, vibrations that coordinate with dual-joint movements. In the eleventh article, R. Horio, N. Uchiyama, and S. Sano propose a human-operated biped robot for transporting objects over rough terrain or up steps. In the closing contribution, T. Sakuraba, N. Uchiyama, S. Sano, and T. Sakaguchi present the design of a spring-based regenerative brake, and they verify its effectiveness by driving a system that uses it. We thank the referees for their comprehensive reviews and the staff members of Fuji Technology Press, Ltd. for their encouragement and advice. |

The JACIII was first published in 1997, and 2017 marks its 20th anniversary. During the last two decades, the research fields in computational intelligence have rapidly evolved owing to the spread of the Internet, performance improvement of computers, and accumulation of scientific knowledge. To celebrate this 20th anniversary, we have selected 6 important research areas from the JACIII scope, and invited outstanding researchers from each of these areas to contribute papers about the progress and major topics in those areas during the past 20 years. Submitted paper went through a peer-review process by distinguished professors to further improve the quality. The research areas selected were computational intelligence, fuzzy intelligence, intelligent robots, artificial intelligence and web intelligence, data mining, and smart grids. Each of those paper covers broad topics appeared in the research areas, from which readers could grasp what happened during the past 20 years. We also hope readers could find some hints about future directions of their own researches towards the next 20 years.
