The ubiquitous adoption of highly capable mobile Embedded devices combined with the popularity of social networks has generated enormous volumes of multimedia content and heralded a new era of ‘multimedia big data Embedded Systems’. As this new era dawns, we face many exciting opportunities and difficult challenges, each with the potential to deeply impact on how we work and live. Current sources of multimedia data such as the mobile Internet, social networking platforms, wireless multimedia sensor networks and broadcast services will expand to include many new sources derived from Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. This explosive growth in multimedia usage requires new scalable, elastic and responsive cloud-based services, not only for storage but also computational services such as transcoding, content description/tagging, organization, searching and semantic-based retrieval.
There are three key aspects to promoting multimedia big data technologies to practices, namely transport, storage and processing. Amongst the most challenging areas is that of meeting the Quality of Experience (QoE) / Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of mobile multimedia big data services. This challenge is becoming more and more difficult due to of the ever-evolving mobile multimedia devices, limitations on bandwidth in mobile environments, the need to conserve energy (battery life), user mobility and dynamically changing wireless connections. Solving the many challenges of multimedia big data requires new approaches and architectures across the four key areas.
