Abstract

Online documents have two major advantages over paper documents: hypertext links and the larger volume of data space made possible by online references. However, electronic media are not necessarily preferable to paper media in all circumstances. Many people print out online documents before reading. Here, we attempt to create a document interface to support online reading. After analyzing cue information used to accelerate the reading of online documents, how the system should present the documents, and how the documents should be managed by users, we propose an online document interface that removes hindrances and supports active reading. We also employ the psychological effects of color in order to realize this interface. Moreover, we confirm the effectiveness of our proposed color interface by comparing it with both a randomly colored and colorless interface.
